How I started to be a potter. 7th month. December 2020
Hi there, I am Kate, beginner potter. This is an article about the 7th month of me doing pottery. You can check the previous post here.
This month I continued working with underglazes, made some “character” cups and tested different types of clay and glazes. Most of the time, I was practicing with the familiar shapes of the pots and used the glazes that I had mixed before. I have finished Understanding Glazes course by CeramicMaterialsWorkshop and started Advancing Glazes course.

I made some character cocktail cups. I used “Velvet” underglazes by Amaco and Tony Hansen 20x5 transparent glaze for this case, but for some reason some of the pots came out underfired, covered with some bubbles and pinholes.
I made them with slabbing technique and, unfortunately, one of them cracked the bottom and the cup was leaking. The rest of the cups came out functional.
After that I made this Grogu mug. For the top layer I used a transparent glaze from the same “Velvet” lineup instead of Tony Hansen 20x5 as a top layer. Nothing was underfired this time, that’s why I am going to follow the same way in the future.
Progress
Also I tested various matte glazes which I have mixed and different clay bodies.
I slightly modified the formula of this green glaze, normalized the amount of boron and I want to test it a little more and add the recipe on glazy.org.
I have finished Understanding Glazes course and started Advancing Glazes course. I will not write a lot about the insides of the course itself, but I will share my progress, results and my feelings about it. I recommend everyone to join the course if you want to learn more about glazes. If you have any specific questions — feel free to ask, I will try to answer.
For now I decided that I am ready to focus on the first products for my future store.
